The Promotion of the E.T.P.I. from Vilanova i la Geltrú and the train arrives in Mariazell, Austria
A historical journey of friendship and tradition between Spain and Austria:
The Tuna de l’Escola Tècnica de Perits Industrials (E.T.P.I.) of Vilanova i la Geltrú, formed by students between 1956 and 1961, will leave an inescapable arrival in Mariazell, Austria, thanks to its trip in 1960. This group of young people, not only will carry both music and Tradition, but it will establish a cultural and religious link with Austria that lasts until now.
The 1960 Trip: A Gesture of Friendship and Faith:
In December 1960, the Tuna began its journey to Austria. During this trip, the two members decided to carry an exact replica of the Virgin of Montserrat, associated with “La Moreneta,” to donate to the Basilica of Mariazell. This symbolic gesture was not only an act of faith but also a message of solidarity and friendship between the people of Spain and Austria.
The Class of 1961: Keeping Tradition Alive:
After finishing their studies in 1961, the members of the Tuna formed the “Class of 1961,” a group committed to keeping tradition and friendship alive in Austria. Over the years, this group has organized numerous cultural events, exchanges, and gatherings that have strengthened ties with Austria.
One of the most important events was the annual exchange of palms in Mariazell on Palm Sunday, a tradition that began in 1972 and has been maintained for over 50 years. This symbolic act, in which palms are exchanged between the children of Mariazell and Spanish visitors, has become a symbol of peace and friendship between all countries.
The Tuna’s arrival in Mariazell:
The Tuna not only made a cultural impact in Mariazell, but also contributed to the restoration of the Basilica and the promotion of tourism in the region. In 2010, to mark the 50th anniversary of the release of the Virgin of Montserrat, several commemorative events were held in Mariazell, including a solemn mass and the awarding of a gold medal of the city to Jaime M. Montanera, who was the head of the Tuna in 1960.
Furthermore, in 2012, the Tuna donated a traditional dress to the Mariazell Museum as a symbol of friendship between all the communities. This dress, which includes the ribbons worn by all during their activities, is a testament to the shared history between Spain and Austria.
