VILANOVA TREES IN PLAÇA CATALUNYA

On November 30, 1974, Vilanova witnessed the inauguration of Plaça Catalunya, a notable event that brought together local authorities, citizens and an Austrian delegation as part of the twinning promoted by the 1961 class of the Technical School of Industrial Engineers (E.T.P.I.).

Sardanas performed by sardanist groups (such as the Dansaires Vilanovins), exhibitions by the Castellers de Vilanova and participation by athletes from the Patronat de Promoció Cultural i Esportiva (P.P.C.D.).

Planting of fir trees from the nine Austrian federal states (such as Vienna, Salzburg or Tyrol), with the anthems of these territories as a background. The roots represented the friendship between both cultures.

Mayor Miguel Benavent, Count Maximilian of Hausburg (Austrian commercial attaché) and members of the E.T.P.I. class highlighted the importance of this cultural and urban bond.

A fellowship dinner closed the event, held in a local restaurant.

The square, described as one of the most successful urban developments in the city, was consolidated as a symbolic space for coexistence and local identity, with a strong historical and international charge thanks to the link with Austria. Mas i Horro’s photographs and the coverage of the Red Catalana de Prensa documented the event.
